How Your Thoughts Affect Your Performance...

Yesterday I gave a speech about performance psychology to the participants on our Bali retreat. We all have situations where we need to perform and it’s important we have a better self awareness of our strengths and weaknesses in this area in order to give our best…

Whether it be a job interview, a sporting performance or public speaking nobody is immune to thoughts, emotions and behaviours affecting their performance in some way, shape or form…

In order to give context I had to simplify the process we all go through when put in certain situations. It normally goes like this:

  1. Situation

  2. Thought

  3. Emotion

  4. Behaviour/Reaction

  5. Positive or Negative performance

So with this in mind I asked everyone to map out a situation they have had recently to reflect on. You can do this too:

What was the situation?

What were your initial thoughts?

What emotion did this elicit?

What was your behaviour or reaction in this situation?

Sure it’s cool to look back and say we would do things differently and I think everyone if they had a chance would if they didn’t perform well but how do you stop it from happening again?

For me I like to ask 2 questions…

  1. Is this thought reasonable?

  2. Is this thought helpful?

If the answer to either of these questions is no then adjust your thoughts to another more balanced or realistic thought…
