Learning Who You Are...
I often hear people use statements like “It took me years to get to know myself” or “It wasn’t until I had my kids that I learnt who I was”
We often talk about getting to know ourselves but how many of us actually know how to do it?
Sometimes life will throw things in your direction that will teach you about who you are. Let’s say for instance you lose your job, your marriage breaks down or you lose your life savings on the stock market. These situations expose us and on the tail end you learn more about who you are.
During these times we take on board different perspectives and learn how we respond and react in adverse situations.
The thing is you’d rather not have to experience these things every time you want to learn a little about yourself. So how do we drive this sort of growth and learning without having to lose it all first?
The key is to seek out confronting or difficult things. For most of my clients in the gym this is coming in and doing hard workouts. Exposing themselves to a difficult task each day teaches them how they respond when things get tough, albeit a physical challenge. These workouts help them develop mechanisms for pushing through or dealing with it and building resilience.
What (controlled) difficult situations can you put yourself in to learn more about who you are?
